What is a lip lift?
A lip lift removes a strip of skin immediately beneath the nose, shortening the philtrum — the distance from nose base to the top of the lip — so the upper lip rolls outward and upward, showing more pink lip and more upper teeth.
The philtrum lengthens with age. A young adult typically has 12–15 mm between the base of the nose and the lip border in women, 15–18 mm in men; by sixty this has often increased by several millimetres, the lip rolls inward and the upper teeth disappear from view even when speaking. Some people are simply born with a long philtrum and have never shown their upper teeth at rest.
This is the specific problem a lip lift solves, and it explains why filler so often disappoints these patients. Filler adds volume to a lip that is already the wrong shape and in the wrong position — it makes a long, inward-rolled lip fuller but not shorter, and in large amounts it produces the heavy, projecting look people recognise immediately.
The techniques
| Technique | Where the scar sits | Lift achieved | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subnasal bullhorn | In the crease beneath the nose | 3–7 mm | The standard and most common |
| Italian lift | Two scars beneath the nostrils | 2–4 mm | Shorter scar, less lift |
| Corner lip lift | At the corners of the mouth | Lifts downturned corners | Different problem, different operation |
| Direct lip lift | Along the lip border itself | 3–6 mm | Visible scar, rarely used now |
How a lip lift works
A long upper lip
The distance from nose to lip grows with age, and hides the teeth
The lift
A few millimetres of skin removed right under the nose, where the scar hides
The result
A shorter lip, more show of the upper teeth, and no filler involved
How much does a lip lift cost in Turkey?
A Velsa all-inclusive lip lift package in Istanbul costs £1,300–£1,900. The same operation privately in the UK is typically £2,800–£4,500.

Why the stay is six nights for a 45-minute operation
Because the sutures come out at five to seven days, and the person who placed them should be the one to remove them. Sutures left too long in facial skin leave track marks; removed too early, the wound can widen. It is a small detail that disproportionately affects the one thing patients worry about most — the scar.

Bars span the usual range in each market, not a single quoted figure. Non-Turkish figures are indicative market ranges rather than quotes from named providers.
US and UK figures are typically the surgeon and facility only. Flights, accommodation, transfers and follow-up are extra in those markets and included in the Velsa price, which is the comparison that actually matters.
Your own price comes from a written quote after a clinician has reviewed your case. Nothing on this chart is a quote.
Why do patients from the UK, US and Europe choose Turkey?
Patients choose Turkey for lower all-inclusive prices, experienced plastic surgeons who operate at high volume, modern private hospitals, short waiting times and easy direct flights from most European and many US cities.
Turkey has become one of the world's leading medical travel destinations. According to Turkish industry figures reported in July 2026, the country welcomed around 1.4 million health tourists in 2025, generating over $3 billion in revenue. Aesthetic surgery is one of the most requested categories.
- Value: lower operating and living costs mean you pay less for the same type of surgery and hospital care.
- Experience: leading surgeons in Istanbul and other major cities perform aesthetic operations every week.
- Speed: consultations can be arranged online within days, and surgery dates are flexible.
- Access: most UK and European airports have direct flights of around 3–4 hours.
- Recovery comfort: you recover in a hotel with a coordinator on hand, rather than managing alone at home.
Every Velsa quote names the surgeon and the hospital before you pay, so you can check both yourself.
Am I a good candidate for a lip lift?
The best candidates have a long philtrum, show little or no upper tooth at rest, and understand they are trading a small permanent scar for a change in proportion.
A lip lift is usually suitable if
- The distance from your nose to your lip is long — over about 20 mm in women or 22 mm in men.
- You show no upper teeth when your mouth is at rest or lightly parted.
- Your upper lip rolls inward and looks thin regardless of how much filler you have.
- Filler has made your lip fuller but not better proportioned.
- You are prepared to accept a scar beneath the nose.
- You are a non-smoker, or can stop at least four weeks before surgery.
You may need something else
- Your philtrum is already short: lifting further exposes too much tooth and gum and creates an odd, snarling appearance.
- Your concern is volume rather than length: filler or fat transfer adds volume, which a lift does not.
- You already show a lot of gum when you smile: a lift makes a gummy smile more pronounced.
- You are prone to keloid or hypertrophic scarring: the scar is on your face and this needs assessing first.
- You have had a previous rhinoplasty with a columellar incision: scarring in the area affects planning.
- You want something reversible: a lip lift is not.
Our self-check below gives you a starting answer, and a Velsa plastic surgeon reviews your photographs free of charge and will measure your philtrum before recommending anything.

Your lip lift journey in Turkey, day by day
Six nights in Istanbul for a forty-five minute operation, because suture removal at day five to seven is what determines the scar.
- 1Before you travel: you send photographs straight on with your mouth at rest and lightly parted, and in profile, with no lipstick. A plastic surgeon measures your philtrum and tells you how many millimetres can safely be removed. You receive a written fixed quote.
- 2Day 1 — arrival: your driver meets you at Istanbul airport and takes you to the hotel.
- 3Day 2 — assessment and surgery: your surgeon measures the philtrum, marks the planned excision in the crease beneath the nose and shows you the amount in a mirror before anything starts. Surgery the same afternoon under local anaesthetic with sedation, taking forty-five to ninety minutes.
- 4Day 3 — review: swelling of the lip and the area beneath the nose, which is marked in the first days. The lip looks over-lifted, which is expected.
- 5Days 4–5 — rest: swelling settling. Soft food, no stretching the lip, no wide smiling.
- 6Day 6 — suture removal: sutures removed at five to seven days by your surgeon, and the scar line checked. Scar care begins.
- 7Day 7 — fly home with scar care products and written aftercare.
- 8After you are home: nurse check-ins at one week, six weeks, three months and twelve months, with scar progress reviewed at each.

What you can check before you pay
The hospital
- Accreditation
- JCI-accredited, with the certificate number given to you in writing before any deposit.
- Licence
- Turkish Ministry of Health licence, named and verifiable independently rather than described in general terms.
- Intensive care
- On site, in the same building, for every procedure under general anaesthetic. Not "available nearby".
- Anaesthesia
- A consultant anaesthetist present throughout the operation — not supervising several theatres from elsewhere.
- Nursing
- 24-hour nursing, with an English-speaking nurse on each shift and an interpreter for clinical conversations.
Photos are not proof
Photographs show you the rooms; they do not tell you whether there is an intensive care unit behind them. The facility is named to you in writing before you pay, with its licence and accreditation numbers, so you can verify it as well as see it.
If you want to see the building in person, ask — we can usually arrange a visit before you decide, and a provider unwilling to let you look around is telling you something.
How we verify a facilityHow is a lip lift performed?
Forty-five to ninety minutes under local anaesthetic with sedation. The planning takes almost as long as the surgery, and matters more.
- 1Measuring: your surgeon measures the philtral height from the base of the nose to the top of the lip border, at the midline and at both peaks of the cupid's bow. These numbers determine the excision.
- 2Marking the bullhorn: the excision is drawn as a gull-wing or bullhorn shape following the natural curve where the nose meets the lip, dipping beneath the nostril sills and across the columella base. Following that contour is what hides the scar.
- 3Agreeing the amount: typically 3–7 mm is removed. More than about 7 mm risks exposing excessive gum and distorting the nostril base. You see the planned amount in a mirror before anything is cut.
- 4Anaesthetic: local anaesthetic with sedation. You are comfortable and drowsy but breathing for yourself.
- 5Excision: the marked strip of skin is removed. Only skin — the underlying muscle is preserved, because dividing it changes how the lip moves.
- 6Undermining: the lip is gently released so it can roll upward without tension on the closure. Tension is what widens a scar.
- 7Closing in layers: deep sutures take the tension so the skin edges meet without pulling, then fine sutures close the skin. This two-layer closure is the main determinant of how the scar turns out.
- 8Checking symmetry: assessed with you sitting upright, comparing both peaks of the cupid's bow against the facial midline.
Lip lift recovery timeline
Swelling settles within two weeks but the scar stays pink for about three months. Expect to look over-lifted at first, and judge nothing before six months.
- Days 1–3: marked swelling of the lip and the area under the nose. The lip looks obviously lifted and the nostrils may look distorted by swelling. This alarms people and it is normal.
- Days 4–7: swelling settling. Soft food, no biting into anything, no wide smiling or lip stretching.
- Days 5–7: sutures removed. The scar line is pink and raised.
- Days 7–10: most patients are back at a desk job. The scar is visible but can be covered with makeup from about day ten.
- Weeks 2–4: swelling resolved. The lift settles slightly as tissue relaxes.
- Weeks 4–12: the scar is at its most noticeable — pink, slightly raised and firm. This is the phase patients find hardest.
- Months 3–6: the scar begins flattening and fading. The lip position is close to final.
- Months 6–12: the scar matures to a fine pale line sitting in the nose-lip crease.
Is a lip lift safe?
A lip lift is a short, superficial operation with a low rate of medical complications. The risks are almost entirely about the scar and about over-correction.
Velsa works only with licensed clinics and hospitals in Istanbul and with plastic surgeons registered with the Turkish Ministry of Health who hold Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons membership.
Risks you should know about
- Visible scarring: the main risk. Usually fades well into the nose-lip crease, but it is permanent and some people scar less favourably.
- Over-correction: too much skin removed, exposing gum and distorting the nostrils. Not reversible.
- Asymmetry: the two peaks of the cupid's bow lifting unevenly.
- Nostril distortion: widening or flattening of the nostril base if the excision extends too far laterally.
- Numbness: of the upper lip, usually temporary over a few months.
- Wound separation: uncommon, usually from tension or from stretching the lip too early.
- A more gummy smile: the lift exposes more gum, which is a problem if you already showed a lot.
- Infection: uncommon in this well-vascularised area.
If you have ever had a raised, spreading scar from a cut, piercing or acne, raise it before booking. The face usually heals well, but a keloid tendency is directly relevant to an operation whose entire trade-off is a facial scar.

Can a lip lift be combined with other procedures?
Commonly with rhinoplasty, since both involve the base of the nose, and with corner lip lifting or filler to address volume alongside proportion.
A lip lift changes proportion; filler changes volume; a corner lift changes the direction of the mouth. They address different problems, and patients often need more than one.
Commonly combined with
- Rhinoplasty: both operate at the nose base, and combining them means one recovery and a coherent central face. See rhinoplasty.
- Corner lip lift: for downturned mouth corners, a separate small excision at each corner. Often what patients actually mean by "a sad resting expression".
- Lip filler: added three months later once the lift has settled, to address volume if the new proportion reveals that volume is also lacking. See dermal fillers.
- Chin augmentation: the lower face in profile is nose, lips and chin together. See chin and jawline contouring.
If you have existing lip filler, tell your surgeon. Most prefer it to have largely dissolved before a lift, so the lip's true position and proportion can be assessed rather than its filled appearance.
How to prepare for your lip lift
Send photographs without lipstick, let existing filler settle, declare any scarring history, and plan a fortnight before you are photographed closely.
- Photographs: straight on with your mouth at rest and lightly parted, plus a profile, with no lipstick. The surgeon measures philtral height from these.
- Existing filler: tell your surgeon when you last had lip filler. Most prefer it to have largely dissolved so your lip's true proportion can be assessed.
- Scarring history: declare any keloid or hypertrophic scarring. The entire trade-off of this operation is a facial scar.
- Smoking: stop at least four weeks before and after. It impairs healing in exactly the tissue that determines your scar.
- Medication: tell your surgeon everything you take. Blood thinners and anti-inflammatories increase bruising around the mouth.
- Soft food: plan a week of it. Biting into things stretches the closure.
- Time off: plan 7–10 days, and expect the scar to be visible for several weeks afterwards.
Lip lift results and the scar
The lift is permanent. The lip looks over-lifted for the first weeks, settles by three months, and the scar matures to a fine pale line over a year.
What a lip lift achieves that nothing else can is proportion. Shortening the philtrum by a few millimetres rolls the lip outward, reveals the vermilion that was previously turned inward, and brings the upper teeth back into view when you speak — which is what makes a mouth read as youthful far more than volume does. Patients who have had years of filler often describe it as the thing they should have done first.
The scar is the honest counterweight. Placed in the crease where the nose meets the lip and closed in layers without tension, it fades to a fine line that most people cannot identify at conversational distance by twelve months. But it is permanent, it is on the most looked-at part of the face, and healing varies between individuals. We show it in our photographs rather than cropping it out, and our before and after gallery shows scars at three and twelve months as consented cases are added.
FAQ
Lip lift in Turkey: frequently asked questions
At Velsa, £1,300–£1,900 for a subnasal bullhorn lift, all-inclusive. That covers the surgeon, sedation, six hotel nights, transfers, suture removal, scar care products and twelve months of aftercare. The UK equivalent is typically £2,800–£4,500.
It sits in the natural crease where the nose meets the lip, and once mature it is a fine pale line that most people cannot identify at conversational distance. But it is permanent, it is on your face, and healing varies. We show it in our photographs rather than cropping it out.
Filler adds volume; a lift changes proportion. If your upper lip is long and rolls inward, filler makes it fuller but still long and still rolled. A lift shortens the philtrum and rolls the lip outward, which is a different change entirely.
Typically 3–7 mm. More than that risks exposing excessive gum and distorting the nostril base, and skin cannot be put back. A conservative lift that leaves you wanting slightly more is far better than an aggressive one.
It will show more gum when you smile, which is fine if you showed little before and a problem if you already showed a lot. Your surgeon should assess your smile, not just your resting face, before recommending the amount.
Swelling settles within two weeks and most patients are back at work in seven to ten days. The scar is pink and visible for about three months, which is the phase patients find hardest, and matures over a full year.
Rarely. The procedure is done under local anaesthetic with sedation, and afterwards most patients describe tightness rather than pain, managed with simple painkillers for a couple of days.
Because the sutures come out at five to seven days and the surgeon who placed them should remove them. Sutures left too long leave track marks; removed too early, the wound can widen. It directly affects the thing you care most about.
No. Skin that has been removed cannot be replaced. This is why conservative measurement matters, and why trying filler first is a sensible way to understand what you actually want.
Yes, usually from three months once the lift has settled. Some patients find the new proportion reveals that they also want more volume, and the two together give a better result than either alone.
Most surgeons prefer your filler to have largely dissolved so your lip's true position and proportion can be measured rather than its filled appearance. Tell your surgeon when you last had it and how much.
Neither, within reason. Young patients with a congenitally long philtrum and older patients whose philtrum has lengthened with age are both common candidates. The measurement matters more than the birth date.
