What is botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin type A is a purified protein that temporarily blocks the signal between nerve and muscle. Injected into the small muscles of the face, it stops them contracting hard enough to crease the overlying skin.
This mechanism explains exactly what it can and cannot do. Lines caused by muscle movement — frown lines, forehead lines, crow's feet — soften because the muscle stops folding the skin. Lines that are present when your face is completely still are etched into the skin itself, and relaxing the muscle beneath them helps only partially. The sooner you treat a dynamic line, the less likely it is to become a static one.
What each area needs
| Area | Muscle | Typical units | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frown lines (glabella) | Corrugator, procerus | 20–25 | The most treated area |
| Forehead lines | Frontalis | 10–20 | Conservative dosing essential |
| Crow's feet | Orbicularis oculi | 8–12 per side | Softens, rarely erases |
| Brow lift (chemical) | Lateral orbicularis | 4–6 per side | Raises outer brow 1–2 mm |
| Bunny lines | Nasalis | 4–6 | Across the bridge of the nose |
| Gummy smile | Levator labii | 4–6 | Precise placement required |
| Masseter (jaw slimming) | Masseter | 20–30 per side | Also treats grinding |
| Underarm sweating | Eccrine glands | 50 per side | Lasts 6–9 months |
How deep each injectable works
Toxin
Into the muscle. It stops the movement that creases the skin above it
Filler
Into the fat layer or onto bone, to replace volume that has gone
Skin boosters and PRP
Into the dermis, for texture and hydration — not volume, and not lift
How much does botulinum toxin cost in Turkey?
Velsa charges £90–£260 depending on how many areas are treated. The UK equivalent is typically £180–£500. Almost all our patients add it to a trip they are already making.
| Treatment | Price (GBP) | Lasts | Nights in Turkey |
|---|---|---|---|
| One area | £90–£130 | 3–4 months | 2 |
| Two areas | £140–£190 | 3–4 months | 2 |
| Three areas (full upper face) | £190–£260 | 3–4 months | 2 |
| Masseter, both sides | £180–£260 | 4–6 months | 2 |
| Underarm sweating | £280–£400 | 6–9 months | 2 |

Should you fly to Turkey for botulinum toxin?
Honestly, no — not on its own. Flights cost more than the treatment, and the effect wears off in three to four months, so you would be flying three times a year. It makes sense as an addition to a trip you are already making, or combined with a surgical procedure where it addresses something the surgery does not. We would rather say that than sell you a package that does not add up.

Bars span the usual range in each market, not a single quoted figure. Non-Turkish figures are indicative market ranges rather than quotes from named providers.
US and UK figures are typically the surgeon and facility only. Flights, accommodation, transfers and follow-up are extra in those markets and included in the Velsa price, which is the comparison that actually matters.
Your own price comes from a written quote after a clinician has reviewed your case. Nothing on this chart is a quote.
Why do patients from the UK, US and Europe choose Turkey?
Patients choose Turkey for lower all-inclusive prices, experienced aesthetic doctors who treat high volumes of patients, modern private clinics, short waiting times and easy direct flights from most European and many US cities.
Turkey has become one of the world's leading medical travel destinations. According to Turkish industry figures reported in July 2026, the country welcomed around 1.4 million health tourists in 2025, generating over $3 billion in revenue. Aesthetic treatments are among the most requested categories.
- Value: lower operating and living costs mean you pay less for the same standard of treatment.
- Experience: leading clinics in Istanbul carry out these treatments every day.
- Speed: consultations can be arranged online within days, and treatment dates are flexible.
- Access: most UK and European airports have direct flights of around 3–4 hours.
- Recovery comfort: you recover in a hotel with a coordinator on hand, rather than managing alone at home.
Every Velsa quote names the doctor and the clinic before you pay, and the product used is recorded in your notes.
Am I a good candidate for botulinum toxin?
The best candidates have dynamic lines that appear with expression, healthy skin, and realistic expectations about what relaxing a muscle can achieve.
Botulinum toxin is usually suitable if
- Your lines appear when you frown, raise your brows or smile, and soften when your face is relaxed.
- You are starting to see faint lines at rest and want to stop them deepening.
- You clench or grind your jaw and want the masseter relaxed.
- You have a gummy smile caused by a strong upper lip elevator.
- You have excessive underarm sweating that antiperspirants do not control.
- You are over 18 and in general good health.
Something else will serve you better if
- Your lines are deep and present when your face is completely still: relaxing the muscle helps only partially, and filler, resurfacing or a lift may be needed.
- Your concern is loose skin rather than lines: toxin does nothing for laxity.
- Your brow has already descended: treating the forehead will drop it further.
- You have a neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have an infection or active skin condition at the injection site.
Our self-check below gives you a starting answer, and a Velsa doctor assesses your photographs free of charge and will tell you if toxin is not what you need.

Would botulinum toxin help me?
Answer 6 quick questions to see whether toxin is the right treatment for your concern. No personal details needed to see your result.
Your botulinum toxin appointment, step by step
Fifteen to twenty minutes, no downtime, and you can fly the same day — though most patients add it to a trip for something else.
- 1Before you travel: you send photographs with your face relaxed and then frowning, raising your brows and smiling. The movement photographs are what the assessment is based on.
- 2Day 1 — arrival: your driver meets you at Istanbul airport and takes you to the hotel.
- 3Day 2 — assessment: your doctor examines your facial movement, assesses brow position and agrees which areas to treat and how conservatively. Brow position is checked specifically before any forehead treatment.
- 4Day 2 — the injections: the product is reconstituted in front of you, the brand and batch recorded, and the injections given with a very fine needle. Fifteen to twenty minutes in total.
- 5Day 2 — aftercare briefing: no lying down for four hours, no rubbing the area, no exercise or alcohol for 24 hours, and no facials or heat for a week.
- 6Day 3 — fly home, or continue with your other treatment.
- 7Days 3–5: the first softening becomes noticeable.
- 8Day 14: full effect. This is the point to judge the result, and to flag any asymmetry while a small top-up can still correct it.

What you can check before you pay
The hospital
- Accreditation
- JCI-accredited, with the certificate number given to you in writing before any deposit.
- Licence
- Turkish Ministry of Health licence, named and verifiable independently rather than described in general terms.
- Intensive care
- On site, in the same building, for every procedure under general anaesthetic. Not "available nearby".
- Anaesthesia
- A consultant anaesthetist present throughout the operation — not supervising several theatres from elsewhere.
- Nursing
- 24-hour nursing, with an English-speaking nurse on each shift and an interpreter for clinical conversations.
Photos are not proof
Photographs show you the rooms; they do not tell you whether there is an intensive care unit behind them. The facility is named to you in writing before you pay, with its licence and accreditation numbers, so you can verify it as well as see it.
If you want to see the building in person, ask — we can usually arrange a visit before you decide, and a provider unwilling to let you look around is telling you something.
How we verify a facilityHow is botulinum toxin injected?
A series of small injections into specific muscles, placed by anatomy rather than by following the lines on the surface.
- 1Assessment of movement: you are asked to frown, raise your brows, smile and squint while your doctor observes which muscles are doing what. Injecting without watching the face move is how asymmetry happens.
- 2Brow position check: measured before any forehead treatment. A patient relying on their frontalis to hold a descended brow should not have it relaxed.
- 3Reconstitution: the product is mixed with sterile saline in front of you. Dilution affects how far it spreads, and an over-diluted product spreads into muscles you did not intend to treat.
- 4Marking: injection points are marked on the skin, typically five points in the glabella, four to six across the forehead and three per side for crow's feet.
- 5Numbing: a cooling device or topical anaesthetic if you want it. Most patients do not — the needle is very fine.
- 6Injection: small volumes placed into the muscle belly at each marked point. Depth matters: too superficial and it spreads across the skin, too deep in the wrong place and it reaches muscles that should be left alone.
- 7Avoiding danger zones: injections are kept well away from the levator muscle of the upper eyelid, which if affected causes a drooping lid lasting weeks.
- 8Documentation: the brand, total units per area and batch number are recorded, so a future treatment can be adjusted from a known starting point.
After botulinum toxin: what to expect
There is no downtime. Small raised bumps settle within an hour, the effect begins at three to five days and is complete at two weeks.
- Hour 0–1: small raised bumps at each injection point, like nettle rash. They settle within an hour.
- Hours 0–4: stay upright. Do not lie down, and do not rub or massage the area — both can spread the product into unintended muscles.
- Hours 0–24: no strenuous exercise, no alcohol, no hot baths or saunas.
- Days 1–3: no visible change yet. This is normal and not a sign it has failed.
- Days 3–5: the first softening becomes noticeable as the muscle begins to relax.
- Day 14: full effect. Judge the result now, and raise any asymmetry while a small top-up can correct it.
- Weeks 8–12: the effect begins to fade gradually as nerve endings regenerate.
- Months 3–4: movement returns fully, and repeat treatment is due.
Is botulinum toxin safe?
At cosmetic doses it is one of the best-studied treatments in medicine with an excellent safety record. The risks are mostly cosmetic and all are temporary.
Velsa works with licensed clinics in Istanbul and doctors registered with the Turkish Ministry of Health, using products from identified manufacturers with batch documentation recorded in your notes.
Risks you should know about
- Eyelid droop (ptosis): the product reaching the levator muscle. Uncommon, lasts three to six weeks, and is usually caused by rubbing or lying down too soon.
- Brow droop: from over-treating the forehead, particularly in patients with an already low brow.
- Asymmetry: common and usually correctable with a small top-up at two weeks.
- Frozen expression: from too many units, not from the product itself.
- Bruising: at injection points, minor and short-lived.
- Headache: for a day or two after treatment, in a minority.
- Spock brow: the outer brow peaking oddly, from uneven forehead treatment. Easily corrected.
- Antibody resistance: very rare at cosmetic doses, more likely with frequent high-dose treatment.
Tell your doctor about any neuromuscular condition, and about aminoglycoside antibiotics or muscle relaxants, both of which interact with botulinum toxin. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are contraindications.

Can botulinum toxin be combined with other treatments?
Constantly. Toxin treats movement, filler treats volume and surgery treats position — most faces benefit from more than one, and they address genuinely different problems.
The most common mistake in non-surgical aesthetics is using one treatment for every problem. A deep nasolabial fold is not a muscle problem and toxin will not touch it; a frown line is not a volume problem and filler is the wrong answer.
Commonly combined with
- Dermal fillers: toxin for the upper face where movement creates lines, filler for the mid and lower face where volume has gone. See dermal fillers.
- Skin boosters: for skin quality and fine crepey texture that neither toxin nor filler addresses. See skin boosters.
- Facelift or brow lift: toxin afterwards maintains the surgical result by keeping the depressor muscles relaxed. Usually started three to four weeks after surgery.
- Laser or peels: for pigmentation and texture, which are skin rather than muscle problems.
- Lip lift: toxin to the depressor muscles at the mouth corners complements the change in lip proportion.
If you are having surgery with us, ask about toxin at your consultation rather than booking it separately. There is usually a sensible sequence, and doing it in the wrong order wastes money.
How to prepare for botulinum toxin
Avoid blood thinners for a few days, send photographs of your face moving, and plan not to lie down for four hours afterwards.
- Photographs: send them with your face relaxed and then frowning, raising your brows and smiling. The movement photographs are what matter.
- Blood thinners: avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatories, fish oil and vitamin E for a few days beforehand to reduce bruising.
- Alcohol: avoid for 24 hours before and after.
- Previous treatment: tell your doctor when you last had toxin, which brand and how many units. It changes the dose.
- Medication: declare any neuromuscular condition, aminoglycoside antibiotics or muscle relaxants.
- Timing: do not have it in the four hours before a flight if you can avoid it — you should stay upright, and seats recline.
- Events: if you have a wedding or similar, have it at least three weeks beforehand so the full effect has settled and any top-up can be done.
Botulinum toxin results and how long they last
The full effect appears at two weeks and lasts three to four months. With regular treatment the interval often lengthens, because the muscles weaken with disuse.
A good result preserves expression. You should still be able to look surprised, concerned and amused — the lines simply do not etch as deeply when you do. The frozen look that makes botulinum toxin recognisable comes from dose rather than from the product, and a conservative first treatment that can be topped up at two weeks is far better than an aggressive one you have to live with for four months.
Longevity varies with dose, muscle strength and metabolism. Strong muscles in men and in heavy exercisers often metabolise it faster. Patients who treat regularly over years frequently find the interval stretching from three months to four or five, because muscles that have not contracted strongly for years genuinely become weaker. Starting treatment before lines become etched is the single most effective preventive step available in facial ageing. As consented cases are added, our before and after gallery shows relaxed and contracting comparisons at two weeks.
FAQ
Botulinum toxin in Turkey: frequently asked questions
At Velsa, £90–£130 for one area, £140–£190 for two and £190–£260 for the full upper face. The UK equivalent is typically £180–£500. Most patients add it to a trip they are already making.
No. Flights cost more than the treatment and the effect lasts three to four months, so you would be flying three times a year. It makes sense added to another trip, or arranged at home. We would rather tell you that than sell you a package that does not add up.
The first softening appears at three to five days and the full effect at two weeks. Judge the result at fourteen days, and raise any asymmetry then — a small top-up can correct it.
Three to four months typically. Strong muscles and a fast metabolism shorten it; regular treatment over years often lengthens it, because muscles that have not contracted strongly become weaker.
Not if the dose is right. The frozen look comes from too many units, not from the product. A good result lets you look surprised, concerned and amused — the lines just do not etch as deeply.
Very little. The needle is extremely fine and each injection takes a second. Most patients decline numbing entirely. Expect small raised bumps for about an hour afterwards.
Do not lie down, rub the area, have a facial or wear anything tight on your head for four hours. The product diffuses a short distance in that window, and carrying it into the muscle that lifts your eyelid causes a droop lasting weeks.
Partially. Lines that appear with movement soften well. Lines etched into the skin when your face is completely still improve but do not disappear — those need resurfacing, filler or, for some patients, a brow lift.
By one to two millimetres at the outer brow, by relaxing the muscles that pull it down. For mild descent that is often enough. For more, a surgical brow lift is the answer.
Yes — masseter treatment is effective for both bruxism and for slimming a square jawline. It uses considerably more units than facial lines, 20–30 per side, and lasts four to six months.
It is uncommon and it is temporary, lasting three to six weeks. Eye drops can help in the meantime. It is almost always caused by rubbing or lying down in the first hours, which is why that instruction matters.
No. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are contraindications. There is no evidence of harm, but elective cosmetic treatment with a neurotoxin is not given during either.
