What is gastric botox?

Gastric botox is botulinum toxin injected into the muscle layer of the stomach wall, usually into the antrum, during a short endoscopy. It partially relaxes that muscle, slowing the rate at which the stomach pushes food onward.

The result is that food stays in the stomach longer, so you feel full sooner and for longer after a smaller meal. There are no incisions, no device left behind and no change to your anatomy. You are lightly sedated rather than anaesthetised, and you go back to your hotel the same day.

The effect is temporary by design. Botulinum toxin wears off as nerve endings regenerate, which takes four to six months, after which the stomach works exactly as it did before. That makes gastric botox the least invasive and least committing option available — and also the weakest.

Bars span the usual range in each market, not a single quoted figure. Non-Turkish figures are indicative market ranges rather than quotes from named providers.

US and UK figures are typically the surgeon and facility only. Flights, accommodation, transfers and follow-up are extra in those markets and included in the Velsa price, which is the comparison that actually matters.

Your own price comes from a written quote after a clinician has reviewed your case. Nothing on this chart is a quote.

Why do patients from the UK, US and Europe choose Turkey?

Patients choose Turkey for lower all-inclusive prices, experienced bariatric surgeons who operate at high volume, modern private hospitals, short waiting times and easy direct flights from most European and many US cities.

Turkey has become one of the world's leading medical travel destinations. According to Turkish industry figures reported in July 2026, the country welcomed around 1.4 million health tourists in 2025, generating over $3 billion in revenue. Weight-loss surgery is one of the fastest-growing categories.

  • Value: lower operating and living costs mean you pay less for the same type of surgery and hospital care.
  • Experience: leading bariatric surgeons in Istanbul operate every week.
  • Speed: consultations can be arranged online within days, and surgery dates are flexible.
  • Access: most UK and European airports have direct flights of around 3–4 hours.
  • Recovery comfort: you recover in a hotel with a coordinator on hand, rather than managing alone at home.

Every Velsa quote names the bariatric surgeon and the hospital before you pay, so you can check both yourself.

Am I a good candidate for gastric botox?

Gastric botox suits patients with a BMI between about 27 and 35 who have a modest amount to lose, want no surgery and no device, and will use the window to change their eating.

Gastric botox is usually suitable if

  • Your BMI is between 27 and 35 and you have roughly 8–15 kg to lose.
  • You want a low-commitment first step with nothing left inside you.
  • You could not tolerate a balloon, or do not want a device.
  • You are prepared to work with a dietitian during the four to six months the effect lasts.
  • You have realistic expectations about the scale of the result.
  • You need a modest, short-term loss before another procedure.

You may need to wait, or consider something else

  • Your BMI is over 35: the effect is too small to be worth the trip on its own.
  • You are looking for a permanent solution — this is explicitly temporary.
  • You have a neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis, where botulinum toxin is contraindicated.
  • You have a gastric ulcer, significant gastritis or previous stomach surgery.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You take aminoglycoside antibiotics or muscle relaxants, which interact with botulinum toxin.

Our BMI and eligibility calculator shows where you sit in about a minute, and a Velsa doctor will tell you honestly if a balloon or surgery would serve you better.

Your gastric botox journey in Turkey, day by day

Two nights in Istanbul and a twenty-minute procedure, followed by a four to six month programme run remotely.

  1. 1Before you travel: you complete a medical questionnaire. A doctor confirms gastric botox is appropriate and recommends a dose, and you receive a written fixed quote.
  2. 2Day 1 — arrival: your driver meets you at Istanbul airport and takes you to the hotel. You fast from midnight.
  3. 3Day 2 — the procedure: blood tests first, then a short gastroscopy to check the stomach is healthy, followed by the injections. The whole thing takes fifteen to twenty minutes under light sedation. You are observed for a couple of hours and return to the hotel.
  4. 4Day 2, evening: you can eat normally the same day. Mild bloating or nausea is possible but most patients feel fine.
  5. 5Day 3 — fly home: a check-in with your coordinator, then your transfer to the airport with your dietitian plan and the record of what was injected.
  6. 6Weeks 1–2: the effect builds gradually. You will not notice much on day one; appetite changes come on over the first fortnight.
  7. 7Months 1–3: the strongest effect. This is the window in which to rebuild portion sizes and meal timing.
  8. 8Months 4–6: the effect fades as the toxin wears off. Appetite returns to normal.
  9. 9After six months: either repeat, move to a balloon, or carry on with what you have built. Velsa continues dietitian support for three months past the effect.

What you can check before you pay

The hospital

Accreditation
JCI-accredited, with the certificate number given to you in writing before any deposit.
Licence
Turkish Ministry of Health licence, named and verifiable independently rather than described in general terms.
Intensive care
On site, in the same building, for every procedure under general anaesthetic. Not "available nearby".
Anaesthesia
A consultant anaesthetist present throughout the operation — not supervising several theatres from elsewhere.
Nursing
24-hour nursing, with an English-speaking nurse on each shift and an interpreter for clinical conversations.

Photos are not proof

Photographs show you the rooms; they do not tell you whether there is an intensive care unit behind them. The facility is named to you in writing before you pay, with its licence and accreditation numbers, so you can verify it as well as see it.

If you want to see the building in person, ask — we can usually arrange a visit before you decide, and a provider unwilling to let you look around is telling you something.

How we verify a facility

How is gastric botox performed?

Through the mouth during a short endoscopy under light sedation. There are no incisions, no stitches and no scars.

  1. 1Fasting: nothing to eat or drink from midnight, so the stomach is empty and the wall can be seen clearly.
  2. 2Sedation: intravenous sedation is given. You are drowsy and will not remember the procedure, but you breathe for yourself throughout.
  3. 3Diagnostic gastroscopy: a thin camera is passed into the stomach to check for ulcers, gastritis or a hiatus hernia. If something significant is found, the injection is not done that day.
  4. 4Mapping the injection sites: the endoscopist identifies the antrum, and often the body and fundus, planning an even spread of injection points.
  5. 5Injection: a fine needle passed through the endoscope delivers botulinum toxin into the muscle layer at 15–25 separate points. Dose varies by protocol, typically 200–500 units in total.
  6. 6Checking: the stomach lining is inspected once more for bleeding before the camera is withdrawn.
  7. 7Recovery: you wake within minutes and are observed for a couple of hours. Most patients eat normally the same evening.

The toxin acts on the nerve endings supplying the stomach muscle, and that takes time: expect the appetite effect to build over one to two weeks rather than arriving immediately.

Gastric botox recovery and what the first weeks feel like

There is essentially no recovery period. Most patients eat normally the same day and fly home the next, with the appetite effect building over the following fortnight.

  • Day 1: mild bloating, a sore throat from the endoscope, or slight nausea. All settle within a day.
  • Days 2–7: normal eating and normal activity. You may not notice much change yet.
  • Weeks 1–2: the effect builds. Meals start feeling satisfying sooner, and you stay full for longer.
  • Months 1–3: the strongest phase, and where most of the weight loss happens.
  • Months 4–6: the effect tapers as nerve endings regenerate. Appetite gradually returns to baseline.
  • After six months: the stomach functions exactly as it did before. Nothing is left behind.

Is gastric botox safe in Turkey?

Gastric botox is a low-risk procedure — no incisions, no general anaesthetic, nothing left behind — and the main risks come from the endoscopy rather than the toxin.

Velsa works with licensed clinics and hospitals in Istanbul, and with gastroenterologists registered with the Turkish Ministry of Health who perform endoscopy routinely. You are given your doctor's name and registration number, and the brand and dose of toxin used, before you fly home.

Risks you should know about

  • No effect at all: a meaningful proportion of patients notice little or nothing. This is the most common disappointment.
  • Nausea and bloating: usually mild and short-lived in the first days.
  • Delayed gastric emptying: occasionally too much, causing fullness, nausea or vomiting. It resolves as the toxin wears off.
  • Sore throat: from the endoscope, lasting a day or two.
  • Bleeding at an injection site: uncommon and usually minor.
  • Perforation: very rare, and a risk of endoscopy itself rather than of the injection.
  • Toxin spread: extremely rare at these doses, but any difficulty swallowing or breathing needs immediate medical attention.
  • Weight regain: the expected outcome once the effect fades, unless habits have changed.

Tell your doctor about any neuromuscular condition and about every medication you take. Myasthenia gravis and some antibiotics are genuine contraindications rather than cautions.

Can gastric botox be combined with other treatments?

It is most often used alongside dietitian-led weight management, or as a short bridge before a balloon or surgery.

On its own, gastric botox is a nudge. Combined with structured dietary support it becomes a reasonable first step for someone who is not ready to commit to a device or an operation.

Commonly combined with

  • Dietitian and behavioural support: included throughout, and the factor most associated with keeping the loss.
  • Medical weight-loss treatment: GLP-1 medication prescribed and monitored by your own doctor can complement it. Velsa does not prescribe it remotely.
  • A gastric balloon afterwards: some patients move to a balloon at six months, having used the botox period to test whether they can work with reduced appetite.

Used as a bridge to

  • Gastric sleeve or bypass: where a modest loss first would reduce anaesthetic risk.
  • Another operation at home: where a surgeon has asked you to lose a few kilograms before operating.

If your BMI is over 35 and you are considering botox because surgery feels like too big a step, say so. It is a reasonable way to test the water — but be clear with yourself that it is a test, not a treatment plan.

How to prepare for gastric botox

Fast from midnight before the procedure, declare every medication and any neuromuscular condition, and have your dietitian plan ready before you travel.

  • Fasting: nothing to eat or drink from midnight. The procedure is cancelled if the stomach is not empty.
  • Medication: tell your doctor everything you take. Aminoglycoside antibiotics and muscle relaxants interact with botulinum toxin, and blood thinners may need pausing before endoscopy.
  • Medical history: declare any neuromuscular condition, previous stomach surgery or known ulcer.
  • Diet plan: get it from the dietitian before you travel and shop for it in advance, so the window starts working from week one rather than week four.
  • Time off: essentially none needed. Most patients fly home the next day and work normally.
  • Packing list: nothing special — just your regular medication in its original packaging.

Gastric botox results and what happens when it wears off

Most patients lose 5–10% of their total body weight over four to six months. The effect then fades completely, and what happens next depends on what changed while it was working.

A realistic picture: someone starting at 90 kg would typically expect to lose 5–9 kg. Results vary more than with any other option on this site — some patients notice a marked change in appetite, others very little, and that variability is reflected in the published evidence rather than being a failure of technique.

Because the effect is temporary and modest, gastric botox only makes long-term sense as a supported window. Four to six months is long enough to rebuild portion sizes and routines if you work at it, and not nearly long enough to coast. Velsa continues dietitian support for three months past the expected end of the effect, and our weight-loss before and after gallery shows botox patients at six months rather than at their best week.

FAQ

Gastric botox in Turkey: frequently asked questions

At Velsa, £700–£1,100 as an all-inclusive package depending on dose. That covers the endoscopist, sedation, pre-procedure tests, the toxin itself, two hotel nights, transfers and dietitian support throughout. Flights are not included.

Two nights. You arrive, have the procedure the next morning, and fly home the day after.

Typically 5–10% of your total body weight over four to six months — roughly 5–9 kg for someone at 90 kg. Results vary considerably between patients, more so than with a balloon or surgery.

The honest answer is: sometimes, modestly. Some clinical trials show a benefit over placebo and others show very little, and a meaningful proportion of patients notice no change at all. It is a low-risk, low-cost nudge rather than a reliable treatment, and we would rather tell you that than sell it as something it is not.

No. You are sedated and will not remember the procedure. Afterwards you may have a sore throat from the endoscope and some bloating for a day.

Not immediately. Botulinum toxin acts on nerve endings over time, so the appetite effect builds across the first one to two weeks.

Four to six months. After that the nerve endings regenerate, the stomach empties at its normal rate again, and appetite returns to baseline.

Yes, usually from six months onwards. Many patients who repeat find the second round less noticeable. If you are planning to repeat indefinitely, a balloon or surgery is likely to be better value.

A balloon achieves roughly double the weight loss over a longer window, but involves a device, a much harder first week and a removal procedure. Botox is easier in every respect and weaker in every respect. If you have more than about 15 kg to lose, a balloon or surgery is the more sensible choice.

Yes — aminoglycoside antibiotics and muscle relaxants interact with botulinum toxin, and blood thinners matter for the endoscopy. Also declare any neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis, which is a genuine contraindication.

If nothing else changes, yes — that is the expected outcome once the effect fades. The four to six months are an opportunity to rebuild eating habits while it is physically easier, which is why dietitian support is included and why we continue it for three months after the effect ends.

Licensed botulinum toxin from a named manufacturer, and the brand, batch and number of units are recorded in your paperwork before you fly home. Any clinic that will not tell you what they are injecting should be avoided.
